Healing Desires

In Healing Desires, new mother Amaka is on her own in Lagos. Uzo, the husband she is separated from after his betrayals, is not there for the baby's night feeds. The childcare agency keeps putting her off, and her anxious phone calls end in tears. She gives Etim, a male nanny, a trial despite her doubts, and his calm, capable way with the baby wins her over. Etim handles baths, feeds, and bottle sterilizing, cooks hearty meals, reassures her about her postpartum body, and uses a contact to sell her car when money runs tight. When his roommate falls ill, Amaka lets Etim move into her spare room, and their warm companionship turns into something closer. Trouble arrives when Amaka's mother comes to stay. She pushes Amaka to return to Uzo and treats Etim as a threat from the first night. A woman from Etim's past recognizes him and hints at a wild video, and her mother uses the video as proof to call Etim a fraud and a ritualist. Etim answers that he lost his young daughter to cancer, that the video was shot on the day she died, and that he became a nanny to honor her dying wish to care for another child. Then Amaka learns the darker truth: her husband got the maid pregnant and bribed her mother to stay away while Amaka needed help most. The news devastates Amaka. Amaka sends her mother packing and tells Uzo their marriage is truly over, although her mother leaves a letter admitting her mistakes and asking forgiveness. It moves Amaka but does not change her decision. Months later, she runs into Isreal, the neighbor who used to drive her to work, and Isreal explains that Etim arranged those rides, asked Isreal to watch over her, and kept sending food and care from afar. Stunned by how much Etim still loves her, Amaka reaches out. When the two finally meet again, they admit they have missed each other and take the first step toward starting over.
