Storyline

Difret is based on a groundbreaking true story from the late 1990s. The film centers on Hirut, a bright 14-year-old girl who is violently kidnapped and assaulted on her way home from school by a group of men attempting to enforce Telefa—a rural Ethiopian tradition of abduction into marriage. Defending herself, Hirut manages to escape with a rifle and shoots her captor dead. Accused of murder, she faces the death penalty. Her only hope lies with Meaza Ashenafi, a tenacious, progressive female lawyer from Addis Ababa who steps in to defend Hirut under the argument of self-defense.
