Meron Getnet

CAREER

Meron Getnet rose to prominence in Ethiopian television and film. She starred as the reporter Helina in the popular Ethiopian drama series Dana (beginning around 2013). She also appeared in earlier or concurrent works such as Gemena (2010) and Diplomat (2012, as Melat). Her international breakthrough came with the 2014 film Difret, directed by Zeresenay Berhane Mehari and executive-produced in part by Angelina Jolie. In the film she portrayed Meaza Ashenafi, a pioneering Ethiopian women’s rights lawyer who takes on a landmark case involving a young girl who killed her abductor in self-defense. The film addresses forced marriage, abduction (“telefa”), and gender-based violence in rural Ethiopia. Difret premiered at Sundance and received critical praise, though its planned premiere in Addis Ababa in September 2014 was abruptly cancelled due to a court order, an event at which Meron was present and visibly affected. She has continued working in Ethiopian cinema, with credits including Yetekefelebet and Tirafikua (both 2015). Beyond acting, she works as a journalist and is an outspoken political and social commentator. She has been noted for criticizing government policies and for her engagement on issues of justice, governance, and civic responsibility. As a poet and author, she published the Amharic poetry collection Lela Ewnet Yelegnem (I Have No Other Truth), which explores themes of identity, personal conviction, dignity, social responsibility, and love of country.
