Best Friends

In Best Friends, Nina and her best friend Simi share an apartment. Simi complains about her long dry spell and announces she needs to get laid. She heads to a bar in a red dress, has a one-night stand, and slips out at dawn, distressed and stepping over broken glass. Weeks later she is pregnant. The condom broke and she does not remember the man's name. Nina is frustrated but promises they will deal with it together and takes Simi to the hospital. Around the same time, Nina starts at Closa Global. Ken, a charming co-worker, welcomes her, sits with her at lunch, and asks her out. She hesitates because of their workplace relationship but finally agrees to dinner at his place. The night goes well, with good food, a Scrabble game, and a kiss, but Nina leaves without sleeping with him. At home, Simi is worried and suspicious but wants all the details. Simi hires a private investigator to search for the father, but the lack of a name makes it difficult. Simi tells her mother, who refuses the news, blames spiritual enemies, and prays loudly against shame. Nina and Ken grow closer and begin dating. When Nina brings Ken home to meet Simi, Simi is shocked, and the recognition is mutual. Ken is the stranger from the one-night stand. Simi breaks the news, and the two friends argue fiercely. Simi accuses Nina of abandoning her, and Nina insists she never knew. They worry the revelation could end their friendship, but through the argument they admit how much they love each other and embrace. They decide not to let the coincidence tear them apart. Ken later shows up at the apartment to apologize. He tells Simi he was raised by a single mother, understands how difficult her situation is, and wants to take responsibility for the baby. The three begin to adjust to the complicated new reality. One of the women sits alone and repeats a mantra: 'Everything will be fine in the end.'
