A Happy Ending

Timi Adeniji writes erotic fiction as Rotimi Thomas and arrives in Lagos sent by his publisher who believes a change of scenery will break his paralysis. His flatmate Joe urges him to explore the city for some inspiration. At a spa called Venus he propositions a masseuse named Olivia for a happy ending only to learn the establishment offers strictly legitimate services. Olivia rebuffs him with professional composure though their banter reveals sharp chemistry. She works long hours to support her siblings Maya and Tovia after their parents died. Timi engineers a return to the spa and discovers Maya is failing math. He poses as a private tutor to enter their home and bonds with the siblings while concealing his identity and career. Tovia finds his published novel featuring a character named Octavia clearly modeled on Olivia. She confronts him in his home office and he admits he fabricated the tutoring role because he wanted to be with her. Olivia is devastated by the betrayal and by the fact that her impressionable siblings were drawn into his fabrication. She ends the relationship and cuts him off returning to work at the spa while Timi spirals unable to write. A deadline from his editor Latoya looms and a career making feature offer from Golden Quill magazine in Toronto awaits. Joe presses Timi to finish the manuscript before the deadline window closes. Timi realizes his creative block has lifted only because of Olivia and that she has become his muse. He completes three chapters in a single night and weaves their genuine connection into the narrative. Olivia finds a copy of the manuscript he left behind and reads it then recognizes the authenticity of his feelings beneath the fiction. She returns to the spa where Timi finds her holding the pages. In a tense quiet exchange, she acknowledges the book is good and gives him a ten-minute window to submit it before the deadline.
