Wife By Barter

Joanna is on the phone apologizing to a client about unfinished laundry while Felix sleeps. The landlord arrives demanding rent and reveals Felix never paid the money Joanna gave him. At home, Joanna confronts Felix, who admits he gambled the rent money. Agatha, a girl from the village, arrives in the city to live with her uncle Chuks, then learns from her mother on the phone that she was sent to work as Chuks's househelp. Agatha protests, but she is forced to stay. In Wife By Barter, desperate for money, Felix borrows one million naira from Chuks and signs an agreement: if he fails to repay in a week, his wife Joanna goes to Chuks. Felix loses the money gambling, and Chuks begins calling in the debt. When Joanna discovers the agreement, she is devastated and confronts Felix. The deadline passes. Chuks sends Agatha to Joanna's house to bring her back, and Felix turns Agatha away. Joanna agrees to go to Chuks's house to secure Felix's release, with the condition that she returns to Felix once the debt is repaid. In Chuks's house, Joanna is treated well but insists she will leave once Felix pays. Chuks makes clear he wants Joanna permanently and adds one million naira to the debt for every week Felix fails to pay. Felix begs and prays, but he still gambles with money Joanna sent him after he claimed to be sick. Chuks has a change of heart, and Joanna prepares to leave. Felix arrives in a frenzy. He declares he won money on a bet and shows Joanna the proof. Joanna is overjoyed, and the couple reunites. Joanna and Felix walk away together. Felix promises not to gamble again and plans to take Joanna to Miami. Chuks agrees to receive the payment. Agatha criticizes him for treating her like a slave despite spending money on another man's wife. He is left reflecting. Agatha is surprised when Chuks tells her she will start school on Monday and will no longer need her househelp uniform.
