Voices Within

Kasiemobi, a young schoolgirl, lives in a small room with her blind mother, Grace, and to support them, she works as a housemaid for her wealthy uncle John and his wife, who treat her with contempt; she brings home leftover food from their kitchen. When the landlord demands unpaid rent and Cassie is sent home from school for unpaid fees, Grace and Cassie visit John for help, and he agrees to pay but forces Cassie to work at his house every morning and after school. Enduring harsh treatment from her aunt, who scolds her and piles on chores, Cassie meets David, a street musician, and joins him in singing, discovering a passion that earns her some money. Her mother, however, forbids her from continuing, insisting she return to her uncle's house, and during a violent outburst, Cassie's aunt throws boiling water on her arm, badly burning it. John takes her for treatment but warns her to hide the injury from her mother, and when the truth eventually surfaces, Grace is devastated. The simmering conflict erupts when Grace confronts John in public, revealing the deep wounds of their past: John resents her for their mother's death, she was raped and left blind, and their father died protecting her. Accusing John of framing her and enslaving Cassie, Grace's argument turns physical when she insults John's wife, but they are separated. Amid this turmoil, a music executive discovers a video of Cassie singing and decides to offer her a recording contract. Cassie and Grace meet with the label and negotiate a fair deal, with Cassie insisting that David also be signed. They move into a new apartment, Cassie trains at the academy, and two years later, John, now remorseful, wishes to see Grace and Cassie again and rewrite his wrongs. The movie closes with Cassie performing in a studio, her dream realized.
