The Spotlight

In The Spotlight, Dayo works as a bartender. He and Rose, his girlfriend, try to make his music career happen with their friend IJ, recording cover songs at home. One night Dayo takes a last-minute request to serenade a friend's marriage proposal, and a patron named Mr Adebayo notices him. Adebayo offers to introduce Dayo to a major music executive. On the way to that meeting, Dayo is in a terrible accident and falls into a coma. Rose and IJ panic at the hospital, facing a huge surgery bill and no clear way forward. At IJ's insistence, Rose stands in for Dayo at the executive meeting and performs one of his songs. She is so well received that she becomes a star named Rosie Flame. When Dayo wakes from his four-month coma, Rose is famous and wealthy, and he returns to a luxurious home. She supports him and encourages him to revive his own music, but her label boss, Richard Cole, refuses to sign Dayo. His friends plant suspicions that fame is changing Rose and that she may be unfaithful. Dayo resents how Rose's schedule keeps them apart, and he grows angry when she forgets the money he promised his friends. In a public interview, Rose calls him only 'my husband' and not by name, which sets off a confrontation. When Dayo accuses her of sleeping with Richard Cole, she slaps him. Dayo storms out and moves into a run-down shack in a poor neighborhood. A blogger named Helen Gist finds Dayo in the shack and exposes him to the internet. Rose and IJ eventually locate him, bring him home, and apologize. Dayo forgives Rose and tells her he realized he was meant to support her rather than shine himself. He collapses from an apparent overdose. As Rose and IJ desperately try to revive him, Dayo's phone reveals a prerecorded video where he explains that he took his own life. He exonerates Rose and IJ, says goodbye, and says he was born to be the reason a star never gives up. His death is followed by the credits.
