EARLY LIFE

Brian Kabugi Kinuthia was born on 2 September 2000 in Nairobi, Kenya, and raised in the Lang’ata (Lang’ata Rubia) area. He comes from a family of three that includes his elder brother Daniel and their mother, who also served as his early career manager after the loss of his father. He attended Cardinal Maurice Otunga High School in Nairobi. After completing high school he elected not to attend university, deciding instead to focus fully on acting and learning the craft through practical experience on set.

CAREER

Brian Kabugi is a Kenyan actor and emerging filmmaker who began as a child star and has successfully transitioned into adult leading roles and production work. He made his television debut at age 12 (around 2012) on the popular Citizen TV series Machachari, starting as an extra before securing a main role as Kenny. He remained on the show until 2017. After a brief period away he returned with a role as Kevin in the film Dream Child (2019; the project received recognition including nominations at African film awards). Subsequent credits include Benjamin Kibonge in the crime drama series Teke (2021), Alfred Makau in Sleep (2022), and Tito Karani in the Showmax / Maisha Magic Plus series Salem (2022–2024), a role for which he notably changed his appearance (including cutting his dreadlocks). In 2023 he starred as Benja in the Netflix limited series Volume (a three-episode music drama), marking a significant international platform. Additional credits referenced across sources include appearances in Kina, Makutano Junction, Know Zone, and a cameo in MTV Shuga Mashariki, with a return planned for Season 2 in 2026. Beyond acting, Kabugi has moved into production and content creation. In collaboration with Makena Kahuha he co-produced and premiered the short film Mid Young Crisis (October 2025 at Anga Diamond Cinema), which explores Gen-Z experiences; the project is being expanded into multi-platform formats. He has spoken about self-funding independent work, learning production on the job, and a desire to create authentic youth stories. He is active in social media content and brand influencing tied to entertainment.

PERSONAL LIFE

Kabugi keeps much of his personal life private. He was raised primarily by his mother following his father’s death. He has been publicly linked to fellow actress and creative collaborator Makena Kahuha; the pair have worked together professionally (including co-producing the short film Mid Young Crisis) and their relationship has drawn media attention, though status reports around mid-2025 describe it as unclear or subject to change. He has no publicly reported children. In interviews he has spoken about the discipline required after growing up on screen and the responsibility that comes with portraying youth stories.

Kabugi represents a successful transition from child star to mature actor and independent producer in the Kenyan industry. In interviews he has emphasised audience connection, authentic representation of young Kenyans’ lives, collaboration, and the practical challenges of filmmaking. He has expressed ambitions that include elevating Kenyan film and personal goals such as major awards recognition. He continues balancing acting, producing, and content creation while advocating for better support structures for young creatives.
