Reuben Odanga

EARLY LIFE

Reuben Odanga grew up in Mombasa, in an artsy family where siblings participated in Christmas plays and creative activities. He was often the centre of storytelling in his estate. He attended St. Peter’s Mumias Boys for primary education, where teacher Arnold Wandati nurtured his talent; he was selected Best Actor at the Kenya Schools and Drama Festival in 1996. He later joined Kakamega High School on a drama scholarship after being “poached” by principal and legendary drama teacher Oliver Minishi, who further developed his skills. After secondary school (around 2001), he hoped to study film in South Africa and gained admission, but funding shortfalls (despite a friends’ harambee) prevented him from going. Feeling shame, he invested the raised money in shares, moved to Nairobi, and took whatever media-related jobs he could find, starting as a production runner on an on-job basis while living on a friend’s couch. He later used savings and harambee proceeds to buy a camera and computer, running a wedding photography business for several years while never abandoning his film ambitions.

CAREER

Reuben Odanga is one of Kenya’s leading television and film producers/directors, best known for high-volume, culturally rooted Swahili telenovelas and feature films through Multan Productions, which he co-founded in 2009. At Daystar University he revived the drama club, shifting from pure acting toward writing and directing. Early professional steps included work on shows such as Wash & Set (NTV). He returned to the Coast to produce content with local talent, selling a pilot to DStv (despite early financial losses from underestimating costs). He focused on Swahili-language productions that found audiences in Kenya and Tanzania; early films Saida and Shhh! earned nominations/shortlisting at the Zanzibar International Film Festival. His notable works include Saida (91 episodes), Nira (60 episodes), Nuru (13 episodes), Selina, Kiu, Pink Ladies (StarTimes), Mo-Faya (Netflix, 2024), MTV Shuga Mashariki, Lazizi (ongoing large-episode telenovela), Nafsi (2021), A Familiar Christmas, Tides (2026), and others. He has produced and directed well over 1,500 episodes of prime-time television. Multan has become a key player in Kenyan long-form drama, talent development, and regional streaming content. Odanga emphasizes spotting raw talent, open auditions, collaboration, and building sustainable production ecosystems. He continues to mentor emerging filmmakers and expand into international co-productions and streaming platforms.

PERSONAL LIFE

He is married to Jacqueline Kalekye Odanga, who serves as Executive Director of Multan Productions. The company was named in tribute to their late sister, Tabitha Multan. He works closely with family members in the business (including brother Moses in production roles such as lighting). He is known for his collaborative leadership style, mentorship of young talent, and commitment to authentic African storytelling. He remains based in Nairobi while maintaining strong Coast roots.

Odanga’s career is defined by persistence after early setbacks (missed film school, early debt, years of hustling). He is credited with elevating Swahili telenovelas, creating employment and training opportunities for Kenyan actors and crew, and delivering commercially viable, culturally authentic stories that travel across East Africa and onto global platforms (Netflix, Showmax, MultiChoice). He has spoken about leadership as creating space for others to shine and remains actively involved in both creative direction and company building through Multan Productions.
