Unlawfully Yours

In Unlawfully Yours, Tobenna sells his house to Dania, a prominent criminal lawyer, to fund a new start in the UK, and the deal is meant to be clean. The plan collapses when his girlfriend Kate supplies false travel documents through an associate named Osas; Tobenna is deported immediately after landing and comes back to Lagos with no money, only to find Kate gone and his hotel room locked over unpaid bills. With nowhere else to go, he turns up at the house he used to own, and Dania refuses to let him in until her friend Nnedi persuades her to hire him as a live-in gatekeeper and driver. Dania keeps him at arm's length, but Tobenna earns small favors by fixing her car and helping around the house. Complications begin when Tobenna's mother arrives unannounced, still believing her son owns the house. Rather than break her heart, Dania goes along with the fiction that she is Tobenna's girlfriend, and the pretense becomes unexpectedly intimate: his mother's warm stories about his childhood and late-night conversations draw the two closer, and Dania, who has been plagued by nightmares from a past kidnapping, starts to find comfort in his presence. Their closeness is tested when Dania wakes from one such nightmare and accuses Tobenna of getting into her bed without consent. Tobenna, hurt by the accusation, moves to the living room, and only after Nnedi points out Dania's unfairness does she apologize, revealing that the kidnapping left her with paranoia and OCD. He forgives her, and they reconcile; soon after, his mother discovers he has been jobless for three months and blames Kate, threatening to leave until Dania convinces her to stay. The mother apologizes, and in the emotional aftermath Tobenna and Dania openly admit they love each other. As a couple, Tobenna and Dania fall into a peaceful routine: he cooks breakfast, plans romantic dinners, and gently urges her to see a therapist for her OCD, which she agrees to do.
