Something Special

In Something Special, Mildred works at a Lagos clothing boutique and cannot shake her mother's pressure. Mama is still scolding Papa about Mildred's refusal of Wale's proposal during the 2020 pandemic, and Mildred is late for work again. Her friend and colleague Ladun teases her at the shop, and Emeka, the friendly security guard, offers to buy her lunch. The warm routine ends when armed thieves steal Mildred's laptop on her way to work. She has no way to replace it, and the loss leaves her shaken. Ladun tells Emeka about the robbery, and Emeka quietly buys Mildred a new laptop. She accepts the gift only after making him promise not to pressure her into a relationship. Then she trips and hurts her leg, and he takes her to the hospital and keeps looking after her. Mama responds with a seven-day ultimatum, so Mildred and Emeka agree to pretend they are engaged and travel to the family compound. There Mama embraces the news, presses for a firm wedding date, and showers Emeka with affectionate nicknames. Papa counsels patience, and siblings Ayo and Sochi watch the performance. Emeka endears himself to everyone. To Ayo he talks about hard work and education. He pushes Sochi to think beyond social media, and he urges Papa back to tailoring despite Papa's Parkinson's diagnosis. He opens up to Mama about his difficult childhood, his many stepmothers, and the deaths of both parents. Moved, Mama promises him a home with them always. Papa hears that Sochi may be secretly dating an older man, and Sochi confronts Mildred. She tells her to stop the pretence and give Emeka a real chance. After four lively days at the compound, Mildred and Emeka return to the city. Ladun senses Mildred's hesitation and presses her to talk about Emeka. Emeka resigns from his security post and opens his own store, promising to repay the money Mildred has lent him. He confesses his love, and she admits she loves him too.
