Joshua, a successful Lagos professional, lives in a modern house until his mother Nne arrives with Ngozi, a young woman she has married to him in a traditional village ceremony. Nne insists the bride price has been paid and encourages Ngozi to win him over, but an altercation sends Ngozi tumbling down the stairs, leaving her with a leg injury and dependent on crutches. Joshua refuses to accept her as his wife and makes clear she is not welcome. Worse, his girlfriend and fiancée Winnie, who lives in America, is due to visit, and he has no idea how to explain the situation. Winnie arrives unexpectedly, and Joshua tries to pass Ngozi off as a mentally unstable maid. Ngozi refuses to stay silent, barges into Joshua's bedroom, and reveals she is his traditional wife. Winnie is furious and demands a quick civil union to secure her position. Ngozi and Winnie clash repeatedly. Nne sides with Ngozi and pressures Joshua to honor the traditional marriage. A kitchen fight ends with a mop handle accidentally striking Joshua, and during another quarrel Winnie throws a drink at him. Joshua's friend Peter advises him to investigate Winnie, especially after Ngozi privately hands Joshua evidence and warns him that his fiancée is not who she seems. Joshua begins noticing strange signs: a late-night phone call from someone named Batista on Winnie's phone, her vague answers about her work, and her insistence on a small, rushed civil union with no family present. Ngozi becomes ill and leaves her meal untouched, so Joshua eats the food and suffers a disorienting blackout during an important board meeting. He realizes the food must have been laced and that Ngozi's warnings were true. He confronts Winnie, packs her luggage, takes back his ring, and throws her out. His accusation is that she planned to marry him for his money. Winnie begs and kneels, but Joshua is done.
