Storyline
Dutifully molded by the wealthy Melinda to one day marry her daughter, Tayo has spent years embedded in the Gomez household, his every move a performance of gratitude. Perfect Groom traces the collision of obligation and desire when Scarlett returns from America with a master's degree, her entitlement clashing with the quiet dignity Tayo finds in Laura. As he rushes to her aid when her car breaks down in the middle of the night and cancels plans with his friend Titi, the cracks in his arrangement with Scarlett widen with each secret meeting. Scarlett's lavish spending and cruel dismissal of waitstaff collide with Tayo's growing defense of the working class, fueling arguments that lay bare his dependence. When Laura becomes pregnant, the discovery of the test by Scarlett triggers a violent confrontation—she slaps him and reminds him that he owes everything to her family. Refusing Melinda's advice to salvage the relationship, Scarlett pushes Tayo out, and he moves in with Laura, prompting Melinda to attempt a restraining order when Laura refuses an abortion. Tayo confronts Scarlett, calling her a monster and declaring his love for her has died; he then kneels before Melinda, begging her to leave Laura out of his debt, a plea met with sarcastic well-wishes that mask profound heartbreak. With Scarlett fleeing to the United States after blaming her mother for a ruined life, Tayo commits fully to Laura and their unborn child. In bed, he kisses her belly and voices a happiness that needs no performance, while Melinda sits alone with the empty house her schemes have left behind. The film ends as Tayo and Laura hold each other, his declaration of love having replaced debt with a shared future.
