Partners In Crime

Anita, an unemployed school leaver, lives with Onome, a motherless girl left in her care and one she feels unable to handle. After Onome is suspended for the fourth time, Anita threatens to send her to her dangerous father, but Onome convinces her to start a business instead. Investing their piggy-bank savings in her grandmother's cream and soap recipe, the pair, in “Partners In Crime,” sell the cream for five thousand naira, only to have customers reject it as watery and lacking NAFDAC numbers, and then be chased by two women who say it spoils their faces. Their eyelash business leaves a client's eyes glued shut, a cake comes out the wrong flavor, and a fake marriage-therapist scheme earns thirty thousand naira before the furious wife returns. Fellow residents catch the pair pretending to be blind beggars, and they flee. Onome then directs Anita to Dennis, a rich neighbor, and suggests she win him over through food. Anita becomes his personal cook for one hundred thousand naira a month and starts imagining a future with him. When Dennis announces his fiancée is returning and asks Anita to plan a proposal, Anita is heartbroken. She learns Onome has taken Dennis's ring, and when Dennis notices, he fires Anita and tells her never to come back. Anita cries outside Dennis's gate, and Onome, guilty, packs to return to her father. Anita stops her, takes the bag, and leads her back inside, saying they miss the people they have lost and that she will teach Onome how life ought to be before she goes to another person's house.
