Make Or Break

In Nigeria Linus and Ego grieve their stillborn child after a week of mourning. Linus consumed by bitterness turns his grief into cruelty and blames Ego for the death. He calls her lazy and wicked for not pushing hard enough during labor and drags her past miscarriages into the fight as proof of spiritual punishment for alleged abortions. His verbal assaults intensify as he accuses Ego of killing their baby and wasting his money on a C-section. His sister Mirabel watches without intervening. The toxicity drives a wedge between them yet they sell their assets and move to Houston on Ego's nursing work visa hoping for a fresh start. In America the power dynamic shifts completely. Ego works twelve-hour nursing shifts as the sole provider. Linus stays home and refuses job offers he considers beneath a titled man who once employed ten boys in Alaba Market. His fragile ego manifests in relentless demands for traditional service. He insists Ego cook elaborate Nigerian meals after her shifts and berates her for weight gain and mocks her career and controls her access to money. The abuse becomes physical when he slaps her during a heated argument about gender roles prompting Ego to threaten police involvement and hide her wallet. Linus spirals into depression surviving on bananas and stolen groceries. He confesses to a friend that he regrets the move and would return to Nigeria if he had not sold everything. The breaking point arrives when Linus eats Ego's saved pizza and puts the empty box back in the fridge sparking a furious confrontation where he cites biblical ownership of her possessions. Ego calls him a thief and the word humiliates him into clarity. A fellow immigrant advises him that peace in America requires adapting to new realities. Linus finally accepts a warehouse loading job at minimum wage with heavy lifting arranged through Ego's colleague. Starting work the next day Linus begins changing quietly.
