Kambili's Heart

In Kambili's Heart, Cambili's mother forces her into marriage as the fourth wife of elderly Mazi Okeke to settle a debt. The third wife Oma resents Cambili from the start and accuses her of theft and witchcraft. Mazi falls ill and dies while Cambili cares for him, and Oma seizes the moment to accuse Cambili of murder. A family elder declares the marriage unconsummated by custom and strips Cambili of any claim to the household. He orders her to return to her mother's compound in disgrace. Back home Cambili endures relentless abuse from her mother and sister Ogo who starve her and overwork her and humiliate her daily. Uche returns to the village for his father's upcoming chieftaincy coronation and recognizes Cambili's plight. He secures her a supervisory position on his father's farm but a household member named Gonsi steals her wages and she loses the job. Simultaneously Cambili's brother Gozie turns violent and beats her and locks her out of the house at night. Desperate Cambili seeks refuge with Uche and the two rekindle a deep romantic bond. As the coronation approaches Cambili's mother and Ogo hatch a scheme to raise the family's standing by marrying Ogo to Uche's father the Igwe. Ogo attempts to frame Uche for sexual assault but the plot collapses when Uche's testimony and the Igwe's scrutiny expose her deceit. Ogo is publicly disgraced and expelled from the palace and in the chaos Gozie is arrested for drug dealing shattering the family's remaining pretenses. The Igwe is impressed by Cambili's resilience and intervenes directly. The Igwe awards Cambili a scholarship to further her education and acknowledges her suffering and potential. Uche now free of familial pressure proposes they build a life together abroad. The couple embraces as they plan to leave for the United States because their love survived betrayal abuse and conspiracy.
