Girl Next Door

Kamsi returns from the UK to his grandmother's rural compound in 'Girl Next Door' expecting the same pampered comfort he left behind, but Mama Nkechi locks the kitchen and tells him to fetch water and work if he wants to eat. His first attempt to take water from a well ends with Amaka, a hardworking food seller, slapping him, and Mama Nkechi refuses to take his side. When the grandmother needs to attend a union meeting, she recruits Amaka to watch over Kamsi, and the two spend their days bickering until Amaka catches her boyfriend Fred with another woman. She breaks down in front of Kamsi, and that vulnerability leads them into honest conversations about their separate solitudes; Kamsi admires her more with each passing day, so when Fred later harasses another woman, Kamsi steps in and takes a punch that leaves him with a black eye. Kamsi's mother arrives from the UK hoping to take him back and immediately scorns his bond with Amaka, calling her a food seller with no future, then tells Amaka privately to stay away. Amaka, already used to life's disappointments, ends the relationship herself and says she wants nothing more to do with Kamsi. He locks himself in his room for days and refuses to eat, and his devastated mother has no choice but to beg Amaka to help bring him out. Amaka feeds Kamsi and convinces him to return to the UK to build a better future, promising she will wait for him. Two years later he comes back to the village and finds her still waiting, and the embrace they share carries a vow that he will never let her go again.
