Storyline

Obum's cart rattles over the compound's uneven ground, piled with scrap metal that buys just enough to keep a pot boiling, while his sister Jessica sits with her books, her mind already running past the walls their poverty has built. Their life is a series of small skirmishes—with Funmi's sly gossip, with Iya Funmi's meddling, with the hunger that gnaws at the edges of each day. When Kaima returns to the compound, she brings a warmth that pulls Obum close, but her presence also sharpens the envy that already cuts through the yard. Finding Hope traces the moment the fragile peace splinters: Obum, already bruised by Mighty's contempt when he begs for a thrift contribution, comes home to find Jessica's desperation has tipped into disaster. Jessica, unable to bear watching her brother's hope drain away, steals a polished shoe from a neighbor's doorstep, believing it will secure him a job interview. But the compound's forgiveness is thin, and when the theft is discovered, the whispers curdle into a mob that chases her through the streets. Obum, racing to shield her, catches the worst of the blows—his arm snaps, and he crumples into a bedridden silence. In the aftermath, Jessica's guilt is a living thing, coiling between them until she finally confesses, her voice breaking. Obum's anger flares, then dies; he sees the love that drove her, and he forgives her with a heavy, quiet nod. Then help arrives from an unexpected quarter: Kaima's brother, Officer Shawn, steps forward to cover the hospital bill and arrange a tricycle for Obum to start earning. With the thrift savings he had guarded so fiercely, Obum repays Shawn's kindness and secures the one thing that matters most—Jessica's admission to the school with the white bus. On the morning she sees the uniform laid out, Jessica's laughter rings through the compound, and the two of them, brother and sister, sit together in their cramped room, singing a hymn that lifts above the tin roofs.
