Bonds Of Betrayal

In Bonds Of Betrayal, Chika takes in Ijeoma and her daughters Grace and Ezinne after Ijeoma's husband dies and his family casts them out. She visits babalawos with the children's names and uses a ritual candle to bind their affection to herself. The girls grow up calling Chika mother. Ijeoma remains in the village, sick and forgotten, her phone calls unanswered. Grace wins a promotion to senior manager and agrees to marry Emeka, a man who demands fifty million naira for a shady venture and later fifteen million more. The sisters organize a fiftieth birthday for Chika with gifts from Paris and stacks of cash. Ijeoma's condition worsens and she begs Chika for medicine but Chika brings only garri. Ijeoma finds the candle hidden in Chika's room and realizes the source of the hold over her children. The candle begins to die and Chika panics. She returns to the babalawos who warn that madness will follow if anyone else lights it. Emeka slaps Grace when she refuses more money and she calls Chika for help. Grace and Ezinne rush to the village after hearing Chika is acting strangely. They find Chika confessing publicly that she used spiritual manipulation to make the children call her mother. She admits she supported them with juju. The herbalist's warning comes true as the candle's demise threatens Chika's mind. Emeka arrives for wedding negotiations and meets the flamboyant relative Done Emeka in a chaotic reunion. Ijeoma prays for deliverance from her bed and invokes scripture to break the chains over her children. The sisters witness Chika's confession and see the physical toll of her witchcraft. Grace and Ezinne confront the reality that their biological mother was not wicked but victimized. Chika's deeds are laid bare before the community. Emeka's greed is exposed when he demands separate marriage funds despite receiving business capital. The film closes on the bedridden Ijeoma, her voice trembling but resolute after praying for her children's salvation.
