Biography

EARLY LIFE

Olarotimi Fakunle initially aspired to become a veterinarian, driven by his love for animals. However, his path shifted toward the arts after he excelled in poetry recitation and represented his school in literary and debating competitions during junior secondary school. His mother played a pivotal role in steering him toward the arts by deciding he could not join the science class in senior secondary school, as his brothers were already science students. He received early training at the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC) in 1997, where he learned choreography, dance, directing, and acting in a tough yet exciting process. His first professional performance came in 1999 at the National Stadium, after which he decided to pursue Theatre Arts full-time despite potential lack of parental support. He worked menial jobs to fund his studies, purchasing a diploma form and working his way through Lagos State University (LASU), where he earned a diploma in Theatre Arts. This marked the beginning of a career spanning over 26 years in the industry.

CAREER

Olarotimi Fakunle is a seasoned Nigerian actor, theatre director, producer, and mentor with a strong foundation in theatre that has shaped his transition into Nollywood and television. He began his professional journey in 1999 and built an extensive theatre career, performing classics by Nigerian playwrights such as Wole Soyinka (The Trials of Brother Jero, Madmen and Specialist) and Ola Rotimi (The Lion and The Jewel, Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again, The Gods Are Not to Blame, Death and the King’s Horseman). He toured the UK and US with these productions and was part of the Nigerian team at the Shakespeare Olympiad in 2012. Notable stage performances include The Waiting Room at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013 and The Tarzan Monologues in 2014. He has also directed and produced theatre works. His transition to film and television was marked by persistence, with early minor roles that kept him somewhat categorized as a “theatre actor.” He gained wider recognition in Nollywood with standout performances, including ‘Asor’ (the warrior princess’s father and coach of the rebels) in the Africa Magic series Riona, where he acted alongside his daughter. In Gangs of Lagos, he portrayed ‘Eleniyan,’ a godfather figure that popularized the name and marked his breakthrough into mainstream audiences. In the series Slum King, he played ‘Imole, Baale of Oro Lede,’ a traditional ruler fighting to protect his people and maintain his “light.” Other notable film and TV credits include Paper Boat (his “baptism of fire” about eight years ago), Last Days, Run, Omoye, Ajochie, Elesin Oba, Trial of Baba Jero, and Black Pepper (2025). He is known for portraying strong characters, including villains, which he differentiates through deep interpretation and immersion rather than stereotypes. Fakunle is also an author, having written the book series The Chameleon Method of Acting (first part released, with subsequent parts in progress). This three-part work offers an African perspective on acting internalization, inspired by the chameleon’s adaptability and influenced by Konstantin Stanislavski’s method acting. It emphasizes total immersion in roles—“You must play a character to the point where you don’t believe yourself anymore”—and is tailored to Nollywood’s fast-paced environment where actors often work back-to-back. He mentors young actors, teaches acting, and stresses the importance of training before chasing fame, viewing himself as “a man for all seasons” relevant across generations. His theatre background, he says, “honed my craft” and “kept me grounded,” helping him navigate the shift from the “loud” world of stage to the “subtle” demands of film. He has worked on numerous projects, including a 2024 cinema release, and continues to practice theatre actively while building a legacy of empowering others through his craft.

PERSONAL LIFE

Fakunle maintains a relatively private personal life but has shared that he is blessed with an amazing family, including his wife and children, whom he describes as the “real MVPs.” He has a daughter named Jasmine Olarotimi, with whom he has collaborated professionally on projects such as the Africa Magic series Riona, where she played the younger version of a character opposite his role. He views family collaborations as “once-in-a-lifetime experiences” and sometimes prioritizes them over financial gain. He protects his personal space by describing himself as a “chameleon”—adapting to different environments while keeping his core intact. He emphasizes personal growth, resilience, and the philosophy that “there is time and chance for everything,” encouraging others to keep working, learning, and relearning. His approach to life and art reflects a deep commitment to authenticity and legacy-building.

Fakunle is active on social media, where he shares insights into his work, family, and philosophy. He is associated with Renegade Theatre and Culture Clone Consult. He emphasizes legacy-building, documenting knowledge through his book to preserve it for future generations, and advises aspiring actors to internalize that “there are no small roles; only small actors.” His work often draws from Nigerian literary traditions, and he has performed in projects based on the works of Wole Soyinka and Ola Rotimi.
