In Roll The Dice, James and Ingrid settle into the luxurious home of Helen, James's elder sister, who makes no secret of her resentment. Helen asserts control by dousing them with water during a workout, dictating their meals down to the number of bread slices, and berating James for his unemployment while he quietly shoulders the household chores. She controls the electricity, the kitchen, and even the air conditioning, reminding them daily that they are dependents living on her charity. James attempts to reclaim dignity by cooking a pot of okra soup to ease the food budget, but Helen pours a bucket of water over it and declares that okra invites poverty. James's frustration mounts as he considers taking menial labor, yet Ingrid, proud and protective of his status, insists he hold out for a white‑collar position.
