Storyline
The movie Eleko (Oba Esugbayi) is based on true events from Nigeria long ago. It starts by showing how Oba Esugbayi takes the throne after another king dies. At first, life goes on with royal duties and happy times. But soon, the British who control the land start to push more rules. They want the king to help them stop a young leader named Herbert Macaulay who writes about independence. The king says no and even helps him secretly. This makes big trouble. Market women, led by strong ladies like Alimotu Pelewura, come out to support the king. They stop work and shout in the streets. The British governor named Graeme Thompson gets very mad. On one day in August 1925, he removes the king from power. Two days later, soldiers take the king away to a place called Oyo. The king stays there for years, far from his home and people. Many Lagos people miss him and fight in court for him. Finally, after six years of legal battle in far away London, the king wins his case. He returns home in a big welcome with crowds cheering. He becomes king again and leads until his death in 1932. The whole film is full of beautiful old Lagos scenes, fights in the palace, and touching family moments. It shows how one man and his people changed the history of the city forever. With great acting from stars like Femi Branch as Oba Esugbayi, this movie makes you feel the pride and pain of the past. It is a must watch for anyone who loves true stories about courage.
