Closure

In Closure, interior designer Gladys chides a friend for smoking at an upscale restaurant. She celebrates at a bridal shop with a bride and a woman in a light suit, toasting champagne over wedding seating. At another gathering she argues with two friends about relationships and storms out. That night she oversleeps and misses a furniture installation for her client Mrs. Peterson, who fires her for unprofessionalism. Devastated, Gladys grabs a stick and goes to her ex-boyfriend Dozie's house demanding closure. Dozie answers the door with his fiancée Amina inside, the nurse his stepmother hired after his mother died. He agrees to give eight reasons for their breakup. The list cites her controlling nature over his family and friends and even his uncle's cat in India, her constant defensiveness, and her wish for many children against his desire for one. It adds her manipulation of household choices like green chairs and her endless comparisons to her ex Victor. On their first date Gladys spoke only of Victor, and later she compared Dozie's cooking to Victor's. Amina returns home early and finds Gladys still there, sparking a volatile three-way confrontation. Gladys reveals Dozie pressured her into two abortions while Amina carries his child, and Amina declares she will leave. Gladys demands the final reason after receiving seven. Dozie admits the seventh reason: Gladys never backed down from what she wanted, making her appear desperate. Amina realizes the depth of Dozie's unresolved feelings and steps back to give them space. Alone on the floor, Gladys and Dozie share a raw dialogue where Dozie apologizes for his selfishness and blindness, naming his trauma from maternal abandonment and stepmother issues. He thanks Gladys for forcing clarity, and they agree to remain friends. Gladys departs but pauses to tell Dozie she likes Amina and believes she will return. Dozie stands on a boat deck meeting a new woman and introducing himself afresh.
