Storyline

The bride and groom emerge from a lavishly decorated SUV, their wedding a showcase of wealth and promise, but the film "After I Do" wastes no time in revealing the discontent festering beneath the surface. Confiding in her friend Uyi, Anna laments the monotony of married life, her mind drifting to the reckless thrills she shared with her ex-lover Cass, a man whose charms were matched only by his infidelity. Her conservative husband Chris, steeped in religious devotion, reacts with revulsion when she attempts to inject danger into their routine with suggestions of BDSM and public sex, branding such acts ungodly. As his refusal widens the gulf between them, Anna removes her wedding ring and lies about her whereabouts, each small rebellion pushing Chris toward suspicion. The fracture deepens when Chris learns that Anna not only complained about their intimacy to Uyi but also maintained clandestine contact with Cass. A visit to Cass’s house—ostensibly to warn him off—becomes the evidence Chris needs to accuse her of emotional infidelity, his voice carrying the weight of a man whose trust has been publicly auctioned. Declaring the marriage broken on grounds of sexual incompatibility, he threatens divorce and strides out, the echo of his departure hanging over Anna’s sobs in a house that suddenly feels more like a mausoleum. Soon, the couple is living apart, Chris focusing on their daughter Nunu while the silence between them calcifies into something that feels permanent. After what seems like a season of solitary reckoning, the two agree to a conversation stripped of pride, where Anna’s yearning for excitement meets Chris’s willingness to bend. Compromise becomes the bridge back to each other: he embraces a new openness, and she finds that stability need not be sterile. The film closes with them tangled on a couch, the camera catching the relief and hunger of a reconsecrated union, as Anna whispers that communication saved their union.
