A Turn Of Events

In A Turn of Events, the film opens on The Unconventional Podcast where a guest named Dabo recounts selling his father's land to fund his girlfriend's doctorate in the United Kingdom only for her to cut contact and marry another man leaving him bankrupt. Host Richie (Maurice Sam) uses the story to declare love a scam and co-host Anita argues otherwise. Meanwhile Diane (Sarian Martin) works as a relationship therapist who claims over one thousand successful matchmaking cases yet lives a polished solitary life at thirty with no partner. Their worlds collide when a radio station books them for a live debate and Richie ambushes Diane with personal attacks on her credibility calling her business a scam and mocking her single status. She threatens legal action but a corporate mandate forces them to collaborate on a three-month campaign for the dating app Sundry. In a tense boardroom they strike a legally binding wager: Diane will make Richie fall in love with her within the contract period. If she wins he tells his three million followers love is real and if he wins she tells hers love is a scam. As they shoot commercials and create content their professional rivalry softens into charged intimacy marked by shared dinners dancing in her living room vulnerable conversations about family and multiple kisses. Richie's friend and PA Femi warns him he is losing the game but Richie insists he is playing a long con. Diane introduces him to her niece and nephew shows him photo albums and opens up about waiting for the right person. Richie finally reveals the source of his cynicism: his ex-fiancée cheated in Greece became pregnant with another man's child and shattered his trust. Their physical relationship deepens but the morning after Richie cruelly dismisses the encounter as meaningless sex and attacks Diane's morals. She retaliates by mocking his emotional immaturity.
