Zainab Balogun-Nwachukwu

EARLY LIFE

Zainab Balogun was born on 10 October 1989 in London to Nigerian parents of Yoruba (Egba) descent with roots in Abeokuta, Ogun State. She was raised primarily in Clapham, South West London, within a large extended family. Due to her mother’s work, she moved frequently and spent much of her formative years living with relatives. She attended Sacred Heart RC Secondary School, where she participated in talent shows, school plays, music, the choir, and formed an R&B girl group called Regné with two friends. She completed A-Levels in Law, Psychology, and English Language & Literature at Christ the King Sixth Form College before earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Kent in Medway.

CAREER

Balogun was scouted by Premier Models Management at age 16 and began a successful modelling career featuring in international brand campaigns. After completing her law degree she transitioned into acting and television. Early screen credits include BBC One’s Material Girl, the Bollywood film Cocktail (2012), The Charlatans, and a featured/background role in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012). She became a prominent television personality in Nigeria, co-hosting and producing The Spot on EbonyLife TV (alongside Lamide Akintobi and previously with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu), working on EL Now, and serving as presenter and associate producer on Jumia TV. She co-founded the online entertainment series The J-ist TV, which highlights African culture and issues. She has also hosted The Voice Nigeria and founded ZABA Productions, a multimedia company with clients including Laurent-Perrier, L’Oréal, and Dubai Tourism. She has received awards including The Future Awards Africa Prize for Acting (2018), multiple TV Presenter of the Year recognitions (Exquisite Lady of the Year, Sisterhood Awards, etc.), and nominations such as Best Actress in a Drama at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

PERSONAL LIFE

In May 2018, Zainab Balogun married Dikko Nwachukwu, founder of Jetwest Airways, in a traditional ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria. Nwachukwu is a widower with two sons from a previous marriage; Balogun has spoken positively about her relationship with her stepchildren and in-laws. She has publicly discussed living with endometriosis for many years (around 19 years without a proper diagnosis) and how the condition affected aspects of her life and marriage, while noting her husband’s support. She splits her time between London and Lagos and has described valuing the cultural experiences gained from living in different places. She generally keeps her private life low-profile.

Zainab Balogun is recognised as a multi-hyphenate British-Nigerian talent who successfully moved from modelling and UK/international screen work into a leading role in Nigerian television and Nollywood. She is also an advocate for endometriosis awareness, drawing from her personal experience. She continues to act, present, produce, and develop content through her production company.
