EARLY LIFE

Adetomiwa Edun was born in Lagos, Nigeria, to Nigerian financier and politician Olawale “Wale” Edun (who later served as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy) and Amy Adwoa (née Appiah), who is half-Ghanaian and half-English. His maternal uncle is the philosopher, cultural theorist and novelist Kwame Anthony Appiah. Through his maternal grandparents he is connected to Ghanaian statesman Joseph Emmanuel Appiah (a Nana of the Ashanti people and descendant of the warrior emperor Osei Tutu) and British art historian Peggy Cripps (daughter of Sir Stafford Cripps). On his father’s side he claims descent from the colonial Egba official Adegboyega Edun. He moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 11. He attended Eton College from age 13 and later read Classics at Christ’s College, Cambridge, where he won the dissertation prize for his thesis on Homer’s Odyssey. He interned with Citigroup (encouraged by his father toward a banking career) but ultimately chose acting and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 2008.

CAREER

Edun began performing early, appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2000. After RADA he worked in theatre, including small roles at the Almeida Theatre and Liverpool Playhouse, and played Macbeth for the National Theatre. In 2009 he became only the second Black actor to play Romeo at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Later stage credits include Lionboy, The Deep Blue Sea and Translations (National Theatre), and a 2024 production of Romeo and Juliet (as Lord Capulet). On television he is best known for portraying Sir Elyan (Guinevere’s brother) in the BBC series Merlin (2010–2012, 21 episodes). Other notable TV roles include Marcus Young in Bates Motel, Sey Ola in The Hour, appearances in Lucifer, Legends, Death in Paradise, Doctor Who (Christmas special), Elementary, A Discovery of Witches, The Capture, Trying, Young Wallander, The Chelsea Detective and Trigger Point. Film credits include Dying of the Light, Cinderella (2015), What Happened to Monday, Banana Island Ghost, In the Cloud, Where Hands Touch, Eyimofe, and Argylle (2024). He also performed motion capture and voiced the lead character Alex Hunter in the story mode of EA Sports’ FIFA 17, FIFA 18 and FIFA 19 (and later FIFA titles), as well as work on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

PERSONAL LIFE

Edun maintains a relatively private personal profile. In April 2025 he married British actress Leanne Elizabeth Best in a ceremony held in Lagos that was attended by high-profile Nigerian figures. Earlier reports had linked him romantically to actress Oona Chaplin. He is fluent in English and has spoken of connections to both Nigerian and broader West African heritage.

Adetomiwa Edun is a classically trained actor who successfully bridges British theatre, international television and film, video games, and occasional Nigerian productions. His high-profile family background and elite education have coexisted with a sustained professional career built on stage and screen versatility. He continues to work across mediums while maintaining ties to both the UK and Nigeria.
