Biography
EARLY LIFE
Kemi Lala Akindoju was born on March 8, 1987, in Lagos State, Nigeria, to parents hailing from Ondo State. She grew up as the youngest of four children in a close-knit family. Her foundational education began at The Fountain School in Surulere, Lagos, for primary studies, followed by secondary education at Queens College in Yaba, Lagos. Akindoju pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Lagos, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Insurance. She later earned a Master's degree in Media and Communication from Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos. In 2007, she joined Terra Kulture, participating in weekly Sunday performances and contributing to the founding of Theatre@Terra.
CAREER
Kemi Lala Akindoju launched her professional acting career in December 2005 in the stage play All I Want for Christmas. In 2011, Akindoju founded Open Mic Theatre. She was an associate producer and casting director for Ndani TV's web series Gidi Up (2013). Her feature film debut was in 2013's Alan Poza, followed by a breakthrough role in Dazzling Mirage (2014). She has appeared in films like Fifty (2015), The CEO (2016), Suru L'ere (2016), Potato Potahto (2017), The Royal Hibiscus Hotel (2017), Òlòtūré (2019), and Eyimofe (2020). Her television career includes Tinsel (2010), The Smart Money Woman (2020–), Rise (2022), and voice work in Iwájú (2024). As CEO of The Make It Happen Productions, she co-produced Gangs of Lagos (2023) and The Black Book (2023). She also served as senior development executive for Nigerian originals at Amazon Studios and Prime Video from 2022 to 2023. She has worked as a casting director for films like Eyimofe and Disney's Iwájú.
PERSONAL LIFE
Kemi Lala Akindoju married Nigerian chef Gbubemi Fregene, known as Chef Fregz, in September 2018. They welcomed their first child, a son named Adeoreofe, in February 2021, and a second son in December 2024. Akindoju lost her father, Williams Akindoju, in December 2024. She is an advocate for sickle cell awareness, particularly through her role in the film Dazzling Mirage. She actively mentors aspiring actors through initiatives like The Actors' Blueprint Course. Akindoju participated in the U.S. State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in 2014.
