Biography

EARLY LIFE

Steve Gukas was born in Kerang, Plateau State, Nigeria, and grew up in Jos, the state capital, during a period when the city was a vibrant cultural and educational hub. The presence of institutions such as the NTA Television College in Jos exposed him early to media and storytelling. He has spoken of a long-standing desire to make a film about Jos and its transformation over the decades.

CAREER

Steve Gukas is a respected Nigerian filmmaker, director, and producer known for purpose-driven, socially impactful storytelling that blends entertainment with commentary on societal issues. He believes films should address the ills of society and has consistently chosen projects with strong advocacy or historical weight. Education and early career: He studied Television Production at NTA TV College in Jos, earned a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Jos, and later trained in Film Production at the London Film School (UK) to elevate his craft to a global standard. He previously served as Managing Director of the Nigerian radio station WE FM. Key directed and produced works: Keeping Faith (2002) – early directorial feature that confirmed his commitment to filmmaking. Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation (2007) – producer; featured Danny Glover. A Place in the Stars (2014) – director and co-producer; tribute to the late Dora Akunyili and the fight against counterfeit drugs. Won Best Movie (Drama) at the 2015 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). 93 Days (2016) – director; dramatisation of Nigeria’s successful containment of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, centred on Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh and health workers. Premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and Chicago International Film Festival; streams on Netflix; part of the first “Nollywood in Hollywood” initiative. Living in Bondage: Breaking Free (2019) – co-producer of the sequel to the landmark 1992 film that helped launch Nollywood. Won Best Movie West Africa at the 2020 AMVCA. Mentorship and production company: As CEO of Natives Filmworks, he co-founded the “First Features” initiative (with partners including Michelangelo Productions) to train, mentor, and provide production support for emerging Nigerian directors. The project has produced multiple films, including Cake (2022), Love and Life (2023), Kill Boro (2024), At Ease (2024), A Danfo Christmas (2024), A Father’s Love (2024), The Lost Days (2025), Color Me True (2025), Katangari Goes to Town (2025), and The Almajiri (2026). He continues to develop projects, including a long-desired film set in Jos. He has participated in international forums such as the Rapid Lion South African International Film Festival and regularly advocates for better training, funding, and impactful African storytelling.

PERSONAL LIFE

Steve Gukas is married and a father of sons. In interviews he has described fatherhood as the most interesting and satisfying part of his life, while emphasising that his wife holds a unique and special place in his heart. He balances family with the demands of filmmaking and has noted the personal strain of time spent away from home during productions. He keeps detailed family information private.

Steve Gukas is regarded as one of Nollywood’s thoughtful elder statesmen — a craftsman who prioritises substance, mentorship of new talent, and films that spark conversation. He has received AMVCA recognition (including Best Director wins/nominations) and is known industry-wide as “Uncle Steve” for his supportive role with younger filmmakers. His philosophy draws inspiration from figures like Fela Kuti: that artists with a platform have a responsibility to speak about issues important to society while still delivering engaging entertainment.
