Storyline

Mrs. Bolatito Johnson, a wealthy and embittered paraplegic, has fired fifteen caregivers in eight months, her paranoia rooted in a belief that everyone is after her fortune. Frank Nwafor, a former bank employee wrongly accused of fraud, loses his job and family, desperately needing money for his mother’s medication and his children’s school fees. Through his friend Chika, a nurse, he learns of Mrs. Johnson’s 700,000 Naira monthly caregiver offer and quickly studies nursing manuals, using a covert earpiece to pass the interview. Hired despite no experience, he moves into the boys’ quarters and endures her sharp dismissals with quiet patience, slowly earning her reluctant attention. Over weeks, his small acts—a surprise birthday cake, coaxing her into hydrotherapy, sharing quiet meals—bring an unexpected closeness. The title of The Carer ceases to feel fraudulent, and Mrs. Johnson slowly lets down her guard. But Frank’s friends Daniel and Chika, who helped him get the job, demand a cut of his salary; when he refuses, Daniel exposes the fraud, and Frank is arrested. The mansion descends into bitter silence, the betrayal cutting deeper than any previous abandonment. At the police station, Frank’s mother and ex-wife Jessica plead with Mrs. Johnson to drop the charges. Jessica admits she introduced Mrs. Johnson to her late husband Demola, whose affair with the businesswoman planted the seeds of mutual guilt and mistrust. Staggered, Mrs. Johnson frees Frank. He returns to his village and, pushed by his mother, resumes his life. A year later, Frank is a certified caregiver, and Mrs. Johnson, her legs slowly regaining function, arrives at the hospital as a donor. Their reunion is stiff with unspoken words; she cannot revisit the past, she tells him, before walking away. Soon after, Frank and Jessica reconcile, acknowledging their shared failures, while Mrs. Johnson continues her quiet recovery.
