The Breadwinner

Nedu, known to his family as Ledu, juggles street soccer in a modest Nigerian settlement with debts to a local vendor, Mama Kechi, who publicly shames him over unpaid bread and Coke. His fiercely protective sister Ada intervenes, settling the debt and confronting their mother about the embarrassment. Their mother recognizes Nedu as the family's breadwinner and light at the end of their tunnel, urging him to focus on upcoming trials for Green Eagles FC and warning him not to lose sight of his dream despite the distractions. Nedu travels to Lagos for the trials but a distracted driver named Ben strikes him en route, severely damaging the joints connecting his tibia and femur. A doctor warns Nedu may never walk again, let alone play football. Ben, wracked with guilt, brings Nedu and Ada to his upscale home. The arrival sparks immediate conflict with his girlfriend Tonia, a social media influencer who resents their presence. Ada lashes out at Ben, declaring him their new breadwinner since he destroyed theirs. Ben commits to Nedu's recovery, arranging physiotherapy and constant care. Over weeks of painful sessions Nedu regains movement in his toes, then learns to stand with assistance. Meanwhile Ben's friend Edmond, a scout, evaluates Nedu and recognizes his raw talent, offering to sign him to Lions Football Club in South Africa. Ben invests heavily in Edmond's agency to secure the deal, and his relationship with Tonia collapses under the strain of his growing bond with Ada. Nedu's bandages are removed and he takes his first unaided steps, cheered by Ada, Ben, and the household staff. Edmond confirms the signing: Nedu will join Lions FC for training in South Africa within days. The household erupts in celebration, toasting Nedu's resurrection as a footballer. Amid the joy Tonia confronts Ben about his emotional attachment to Ada, which leads to an explosive breakup where she accuses him of choosing a gutter rat over her.
