Storyline
Mothers of Chibok is a 2024 documentary that marks 10 years since Boko Haram kidnapped 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in Nigeria in 2014. Directed by Joel Kachi Benson, it follows a group of mothers, some who lost daughters in the attack, over one farming season in the village. They wake early to till the soil with hoes and machetes, plant seeds, and pray for good rain and harvest. The money from crops helps break poverty and pay school fees, especially for girls who remain. The film shows four main mothers as they share daily life, grief, and joy. They talk about the night of the abduction, how fear still lingers with ongoing terror, but they refuse to stop sending kids to school. One mother might speak of her missing girl, another of raising the ones left with extra care. Community gathers for prayers and songs that give hope. Intercut with village scenes, it highlights how these women stand tall like warriors, pushing for education as a human right many take for granted. Produced with Shark Island Productions and others like Jamie Patricof and Ian Darling as executive producer. It runs 88 minutes and had world premiere at DOC NYC festival. The story ends on notes of perseverance, with mothers harvesting crops and planning for the next year, but reminds that many girls are still missing or affected. No big updates on rescues, but focus on how life goes on with pain and strength. Themes cover systemic issues like government neglect and women's abandonment in Nigeria. It's emotional and gripping, showing personal sides the news forgot.
