More Than Marriage

Tobi and Nkem's marriage is strained from the start: he yearns for children and a devoted wife, while she, career-focused and secretly on contraceptives, keeps him at a distance. Their arguments over family planning and Tobi's mother betray deep dissatisfaction, and Nkem's recurring dream of a threatening maid becomes an omen she cannot shake. Hoping to ease the tension, they hire Hauwa, a cheerful househelp, but Hauwa's warmth and ease with Tobi ignite Nkem's jealousy. Nkem subjects Hauwa to humiliating chores, belittles her, and slaps her after learning Tobi gave the girl a ride. Tobi, worn down by Nkem's insecurity, responds to Hauwa's attention, and the two grow dangerously close. The breaking point arrives when Nkem catches Tobi and Hauwa together and demands Hauwa leave; Tobi refuses, siding with Hauwa. Heartbroken, Nkem walks out, and Tobi and Hauwa become a couple, soon expecting a child. Months later, Nkem returns homeless and broken, but Tobi and Hauwa only allow her to stay as their maid, forcing her to kneel, clean, cook, and endure constant mockery. Hauwa goes into labor while Tobi dotes on her; her water breaks, he panics, and he rushes to carry her to the hospital. The film ends on this frantic dash, with the birth imminent and Nkem left alone in the house.
