EARLY LIFE

Born on January 5, 1980 in Ohafia, Abia State, Nigeria, Uchechi Kalu spent her early years immersed in the rich cultural traditions of southeastern Nigeria. Her formative experiences in Ohafia deeply influenced her sense of identity and storytelling, fostering a connection to oral history and community life that would later shape her voice as a poet and educator. Relocating to the United States during her youth, Uchechi embraced the duality of her Nigerian-American heritage. This fusion of cultures became a wellspring of inspiration, allowing her to explore themes of identity, diaspora, and belonging in her creative work. Uchechi began her formal artistic training at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, where she majored in creative writing and studied voice. There, she cultivated her talent in poetry and performance, setting the stage for a lifelong engagement with artistic expression. She later attended Princeton University, where she majored in Near Eastern Studies with a certificate in Arabic Language and Culture. CAREER

Uchechi is perhaps best known for her poetry, particularly her debut collection, Flowers Blooming Against A Bruised Grey Sky (2006), which earned her a nomination for the Northern California Book Award. The collection is lauded for its emotional resonance and depth, establishing her as a voice of courage and reflection. She studied under the late legendary poet and activist June Jordan and taught through the “Poetry for the People” program at UC Berkeley, continuing Jordan’s legacy of poetry as a form of empowerment and resistance. Uchechi also contributed to Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology, further reflecting her dedication to social justice, inclusion, and youth advocacy through literature.
