EARLY LIFE

Okechukwu Ogunjiofor was born on 12 November 1964 in Ameibu Ebenato, Orsu LGA, Imo State, to Chief M. C. Ogunjiofor (a poet, artist, painter, sculptor, teacher, and author of works including an anthology of modern Igbo verse) and Catherine Nnenna Ogunjiofor (also a teacher). He grew up in an arts- and culture-oriented environment in southeastern Nigeria. He attended Union Primary School, Awo Idemilli, Orsu, and University Ihitenansa Secondary School, Orsu. He gained admission to study Law at the University of Jos but was prevented from continuing after a serious motorcycle (okada) accident that left him hospitalized for about six months. He then pursued film and television production training at the Television College (NTA College) in Jos (1985–1987), with additional continuous education at the University of Jos. He later obtained a B.Sc. in Government and Public Administration from Imo State University and further professional training, including at UCLA.

CAREER

Ogunjiofor is widely recognized as a co-pioneer of the modern Nigerian film industry (Nollywood) through his work on the 1992 Igbo-language video film Living in Bondage. After training in Jos, he worked as General Manager at Powermike Promotions (1988–1989). Facing unemployment in Lagos, he spent years hawking while developing the idea of using affordable video (VHS/ENG) cameras to produce films for the home-video market, targeting audiences who owned VCRs. He conceived the story of Living in Bondage (inspired in part by an encounter with a secret society group), wrote the screenplay, acted in it (as Paulo), and co-produced it with Kenneth Nnebue. The film became a massive commercial success, selling hundreds of thousands of copies and establishing the direct-to-video model that launched Nollywood. He has publicly stated that he received very little financial reward from the project (reports of as little as N3,500 or small advances) and was sidelined from the sequel despite his foundational role. Subsequent early works include Circle of Doom, Nneka the Pretty Serpent (1994; producer/actor, multiple awards), Brotherhood of Darkness, When Flowers Turn Black, and others. He also produced television content such as Rough Edges, Cyberia (Land of Illusion), Sons and Daughters, Barbers Wisdom (for M-Net), and Born to Win. After a long period of relative absence from mainstream Nollywood production (during which he focused on television, writing, consultancy, mentoring, and further education), he returned with the historical epic Amina (research begun around 1999; released later). The film, which he wrote/produced, won Best Overall Movie at the 2022 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) and became the first Nigerian film to appear on a global Netflix Top 10 list. He has received awards including FME Awards for Living in Bondage and Nneka the Pretty Serpent (1996), Lifetime Achievement recognition from the Lagos International Film Festival (2007), and other industry honors. He has authored books such as The Call, The Cross and the Crown, The Mystery of Salvation, Vultures at Twilight, and The Legend of Queen Amina. He has also been involved in youth mentoring and international cultural exchange programs.

PERSONAL LIFE

Okey Ogunjiofor is married to Gloria Ogunjiofor (née Ekanem, from Akwa Ibom State), an actress, model, and fashion designer. They married on 12 November 1995 and have four children (three sons and one daughter). He has spoken of his wife’s support, including financial backing during challenging periods of his career. He is a Christian and has described himself as a preacher of the gospel. He maintains interests in reading and writing and has supported community initiatives, including a scholarship scheme for indigent students from his hometown area.

Okey Ogunjiofor is frequently described as the “father” or a foundational pioneer of Nollywood for demonstrating the commercial viability of the video-film format. Despite limited personal financial gain from his earliest breakthroughs, he has expressed fulfillment in the industry’s growth, employment creation, and cultural impact. He continues to work as a filmmaker, consultant, author, and advocate for professional storytelling while maintaining a presence on social media.
