Biography

EARLY LIFE

Ngozi Nwosu is a Nigerian actress born on August 1, 1963, in Arochukwu, Abia State, Nigeria. She grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and attended St. Paul Anglican School, Maryland Comprehensive High School, and East Rosary High School in Lagos. She learned performing arts at the Royal Theatre Art Club School under Reverend Fabian Oko and is fluent in Igbo, Yoruba, and English. Her father, a veteran of the Biafran war, was killed during the Nigerian Civil War, which deeply impacted her upbringing. Her passion for acting began early in life, and she pursued it with fervor, participating in drama and entertainment activities as a child. Later, she studied Mass Communication at the university to further her interest in the entertainment field.

PERSONAL LIFE

Ngozi Nwosu’s personal life has been marked by significant challenges. She has been open about experiencing domestic abuse in a past relationship, describing her marriage as 'hell'. She revealed she called off her wedding just one or two days before the ceremony after enduring repeated physical violence from her fiancé, including a severe incident while pregnant where she was dragged by the hair. She was briefly married to a dancer in the creative industry before separating amicably; her ex-husband later remarried and passed away. As an Igbo woman, she acknowledged the societal stigma surrounding divorce but believes it's better to move on from an unworking marriage. She currently advises women against staying in abusive relationships, emphasizing that marriage is not mandatory and violence often recurs. She is currently single, with no publicly known children. In 2012, Ngozi was diagnosed with a serious kidney-related illness and received treatment in the UK, an experience she described as 'being buried alive' amid rumors of leukemia and HIV. The treatment was funded by public donations and government support. After recovering, she announced in 2024 that she would no longer provide free services to Abia State due to a lack of support during her illness. She marked her 60th birthday in August 2023 with a glamorous photo series. Nwosu has also become a vocal critic of Nollywood’s current direction, lamenting dwindling rehearsal practices and storytelling standards. She mentors emerging actors, emphasizing discipline, humility, and education in the creative arts. Her influence goes beyond memorable roles, representing strength in vulnerability and resilience in adversity, and she serves as a guiding force for younger generations in Nollywood.

CAREER

Her career officially began in the early stages of Nollywood, where she quickly made a name for herself due to her remarkable performances in various soaps and films. She debuted in school plays and the soap opera 'Ripples,' where she portrayed the memorable Madam V-Boot. She gained prominence in 1992 with the Igbo-language blockbuster 'Living in Bondage,' which propelled her into the limelight and is often credited for Nollywood’s first romantic on-screen kiss. Nwosu’s unique blend of comedic timing and emotional depth made her a sought-after actress. She achieved iconic status as Peace in 'Fuji House of Commotion,' cementing her as a staple in mainstream Nigerian comedy and TV. Her filmography also includes 'Greatest Weapon,' 'Thunderbolt,' 'Fake Doctor,' 'A Cry For Help,' 'Dark Secret,' 'Dr Thomas,' 'True or False,' 'Daddy Must Obey,' 'Vineyard,' 'Harbinger,' 'Ikuku,' 'Night and Day,' 'No Shaking,' 'Open Secret,' 'Private Sin,' 'Slave Master,' 'Skinny Girl in Transit,' 'Light in the Dark,' 'Crazy Grannies (2021),' 'The Silent Baron (2021),' and 'Broken Portrait (2024).' She expanded into producing with credits including 'Evil Passion,' 'Stainless,' and the radio drama 'Onga.' She has also been featured in music videos for artists like Davido, Phyno, and Chidinma. Despite her remarkable career, Nwosu has expressed frustration with industry politics, believing age should not be a barrier to roles.

In 2012, Ngozi Nwosu was diagnosed with a serious kidney-related illness, which she described as feeling "buried alive"; she received treatment in the UK funded by public donations and government support, amid false rumors of leukemia or HIV. Feeling unsupported by the Abia State government during her illness, she vowed in 2024 not to offer free services to the state. No specific awards are highlighted in sources, though her veteran status and contributions to Nollywood are widely recognized.
