In Third Party, Charles struggles with erectile dysfunction and a strained marriage to Vee, so he sees Dr. Sid for therapy and confides in Oliver, a new gym acquaintance. Oliver, still raw from a breakup, begins a passionate affair with Emma, not knowing she is Charles's wife. Their connection deepens through dates and declarations, but Emma hides her marriage. She discovers she is pregnant with Oliver's child and meets him in an office to confess she will terminate, citing bad timing, her career, and Oliver's crazy ex — unaware the ex is Vee, Charles's wife. Vee appears at Oliver's home and he forcibly ejects her after a volatile confrontation. Charles, growing suspicious, hires a private investigator to tail Oliver and learns the truth. He invites Oliver to his house under false pretenses, where the investigator reveals Emma as Charles's wife. The revelation leaves Oliver feeling manipulated and betrayed by both of them. Charles, devastated by Emma's abortion of their child and her infidelity, expels her from their home. Oliver rejects Emma's attempts to reconcile, throwing a drink in her face and ordering her out of his life. The fallout cascades: Charles and Emma finalize their divorce, with Emma signing papers and admitting she checked out of the marriage emotionally long before the affair.
