Storyline
In The Man She Loves, Ebube's evenings are measured in okro soup and playful critiques from his eight-year-old daughter Ifemeluma, who kisses him after rating his cooking; a few streets away, Nkoli calms Nene's first-day nerves by telling her how wonderful she is. Though both homes are warm, each child quietly yearns for a more complete family. When Ebube walks into a business meeting and finds Nkoli, his old flame, the two rediscover their school-day chemistry over lunch and begin dating. Their daughters, however, are classmates who turn into bitter rivals, fighting over seats and trading insults until the headmistress knows them by name. A forced apology dinner only yields whispered threats, and as Ife feels her father's attention slipping toward Nene, and Nene resents her mother's affection for Ife, the strain boils over when Ife insults Nkoli at the table. Nkoli breaks off the relationship, declaring they moved too fast and that Ebube's daughter is unruly. The separation leaves both households in quiet grief; Ebube sits in his bedroom with a drink, mourning his late wife while wondering where he failed as a parent, and Nkoli confesses to her aunt how ashamed she felt to be a single mother. Then a broken-down school bus changes the current. Nkoli drives Ife home, and the gentleness of that ride begins to thaw the girl's hostility. The daughters, who secretly long for their parents to reunite, engineer a dinner invitation. Dressed in matching outfits, the girls command the living room with a karaoke performance and tell their parents to kiss. In the kitchen, Ebube admits that Nkoli brings laughter back into his life; she says she has fallen in love with him all over again. The two families join ranks. Ebube and Nkoli embrace and promise to spend their lives together, while Ifemeluma and Nene declare themselves sisters and plan the business of being a big family. The four settle onto the sofa for another karaoke night and laughter.
