Harrison meets Ndidi on a street and asks for her number but she declines because she has a boyfriend. One year earlier Ndidi's father Emeka died in a trailer accident at his shop and left Ndidi her sister Chisom and their stepmother Mathilda devastated. Ndidi endures harsh treatment from Mathilda who forces her to do all household chores and favors her biological son Chisom. Mathilda pressures Ndidi to marry Chief Sam a wealthy older polygamist for a one million naira bride price to settle the family debts. Ndidi reconnects with Desmond her ex boyfriend and a youth corps member who gifts her a phone and promises to take her away after his service. Harrison reappears and poses as the CEO of Sterling Properties and courts both Ndidi and Mathilda and offers double the bride price to marry Ndidi himself. Ndidi discovers the deception when Harrison brings her to a modest house instead of a luxury home and reveals he is a driver who used his savings to pay the bride price. Ndidi demands an annulment but Harrison insists on starting fresh. Mathilda then reveals that Ndidi is not her biological daughter and that her late father brought her to Mathilda as a child due to tribal conflicts with her maternal family. Ndidi leans on Desmond who offers to fund a divorce. She chooses to stay with Harrison after he proves his commitment by passing his real estate exam and purchasing a new house and cars and supporting her laundry business. Their relationship deepens as Ndidi becomes pregnant. Chisom spirals into trouble and gets arrested for murder after a friend's drug overdose. Mathilda falls critically ill and is diagnosed with brain cancer that requires expensive surgery. Ndidi initially refuses financial help and cites years of abuse but Harrison persuades her to assist and argues that Mathilda raised her. She sends money through Chisom for the surgery but Mathilda dies shortly after.
