Mama Says No

Nonso and Kemi enjoy a loving marriage in their Lagos home while they wait for his mother Mama Nkechi to visit from Umuahia. She arrives without warning with a haul of yams and greets Nonso with warmth that vanishes the moment she meets Kemi. Mama dismisses Kemi as too old and culturally foreign and domestically inadequate then launches into daily insults about her cooking and cleaning and age. She asserts ownership of the house as the mother of its owner and rejects Kemi's meals and mocks her affection for Nonso. Nonso struggles to balance filial duty with marital loyalty and pleads for peace but he never draws a line. The pressure builds until Mama brings Omalicha into the home as a younger Igbo woman she considers a more suitable wife. Kemi reaches her limit and erupts in a confrontation that declares her legal marriage and threatens to move Nonso far from Mama's reach and warns that her silence should not be mistaken for weakness. The conflict peaks on their first anniversary when Nonso prepares a romantic dinner and Mama interrupts with scorn that mocks the celebration as trivial compared to traditional milestones. Later Mama and Omalicha sabotage Kemi's soup with excessive salt and Kemi storms out in fury. Nonso follows her to the bedroom and finds Omalicha attempting to seduce him then Kemi walks in on the scene forcing a decisive moment where Nonso publicly rejects Omalicha and affirms Kemi as his only wife.
