EARLY LIFE

Abiri Tobi Folagade was born on 29 August 1996 and spent most of his formative years in Ile-Ife, Osun State. He grew up in a disciplined, religious, and education-focused home. His father was an engineer and a church elder; his mother is a retired headmistress and deaconess. As the last child, he often accompanied his mother to work and observed her interactions, which later influenced his character portrayals. He attended Daysprings International School (and references to Oladimeji Preparatory School) for primary education and Ambassadors’ College Secondary School in Ile-Ife. As a child he briefly wanted to become a doctor, later considered banking, but was drawn to the arts and entertainment from around age 11. In secondary school he was recognised for being the funniest and most jovial student. He has spoken of growing up with strong family support and exposure to strict but caring mother figures in his community.

CAREER

Folagade began creating content during the COVID-19 pandemic around 2020 while approaching his final year at university. He initially posted reaction videos and other short skits on Instagram and TikTok. His breakthrough came with the Mama Deola character, which he introduced in the latter part of 2021. The character was inspired by conversations with friends about the shared mannerisms of Nigerian mothers and by observing women in everyday settings (church, neighbourhoods, parties). Mama Deola is portrayed as a sharp-tongued, caring, opinionated, and culturally authentic African mother figure. The skits emphasise originality, cultural details (including dialect and dressing), and relatable family scenarios, which resonated widely across Nigeria and the diaspora. He has acted in the film The Eve (2019) and the Africa Magic series Okoto (2021). He has collaborated with established figures including Funke Akindele (who supported him early and has been described as a godmother figure), Sola Sobowale, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), Bukky Wright, Shaffy Bello, Kizz Daniel, and PSquare. Brand partnerships have included Netflix, Coca-Cola, Toyota, Shoprite, KFC, Knorr, Prime Video, Colgate, MTN, Peak Milk, Close Up, and Sprite. In 2026 he expanded into feature filmmaking as producer and executive producer of A Mama Deola Wedding Story, directed by Femi Adebayo. The film, the first original production on the streaming platform Kava, features a large cast including Omowunmi Dada, Rotimi Salami, Shaffy Bello, Bukky Wright, and others. A notable production highlight was a wedding sequence involving over 600 cast members and extras, filmed over approximately 20 hours. The movie premiered in Lagos in early September 2026 and was later made available on Kava. He has met public figures such as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in connection with the project. PERSONAL LIFE

Folagade Banks maintains a relatively private personal life. He has described his family as liberal and supportive of his creative pursuits; his mother is one of his biggest supporters. He grew up in a Christian household and has credited his upbringing for the authenticity in his content. In interviews he has expressed interest in further education (a Master’s degree and possibly a doctorate) and has mentioned enjoying hanging out with friends, attending events, and dressing fashionably for occasions.

Folagade has spoken about using social media as both a creative outlet and income source, emphasising consistency, originality, and passion over chasing trends or immediate financial rewards. He draws on his Geography background (particularly human geography) to analyse audiences and tailor content. His work is noted for bridging generations and preserving cultural narratives through humour. He continues to evolve the Mama Deola brand (including variations such as UK Mama Deola or marriage-counsellor versions) while expanding into larger-scale productions.
