Mama And Me

The film opens with Rosetta arguing with her boyfriend Will on a porch while her teenage daughter Abumchi watches from behind a curtain. Will ends their relationship citing Rosetta's baggage and her denial of Abumchi. At the same time Femi, a charming but commitment-phobic returnee, dismisses Belinda after a one-night stand and refuses her domestic gestures while revealing his aversion to marriage. Rosetta's cruelty toward Abumchi worsens as she arranges to send the girl away as a house help and photographs her for an agency despite Abumchi's pleas. Abumchi flees and crosses paths with Femi who takes her in for the night. As they bond a revelation emerges: years earlier Femi and his ex-wife hired Rosetta as a surrogate after being told the wife could not carry a child. The wife secretly took contraceptives to maintain her figure while having an affair with their doctor which led to divorce and Femi's departure abroad. Before leaving Femi instructed Rosetta to terminate the surrogacy but she kept the pregnancy and raised Abumchi as her own while concealing the truth. Femi returns to Nigeria unaware Abumchi was born and meets his biological daughter. Rosetta discovers Femi's identity and confronts him demanding thirty million naira as compensation and threatening to keep Abumchi unless paid. The confrontation peaks at Rosetta's doorstep where Femi arrives with Abumchi and Rosetta douses him with water before brandishing a machete and insisting on her price. Femi counters with an offer of ten million naira which she immediately rejects. During a meeting at Femi's house Rosetta reads Abumchi's diary which details the girl's yearning for maternal love and her pain at Rosetta's hostility. The guilt overwhelms Rosetta completely and she begins to soften toward her daughter. Meanwhile Femi learns his ex-wife died of a drug overdose in rehab.
