In Heart Lessons, Ife works long shifts at a Lagos pharmacy to support her sister Mma and their mother Mama after their father Nnamdi abandoned them. When a customer named Ebuka has his card declined, Ife impulsively pays the 15,000 naira for his cologne, and he returns the next day to repay her with 50,000 naira as interest. A quiet bond forms between them, but Mama is soon diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer and dies. The loss leaves Ife to shoulder rent and school fees alone, and she pushes herself until she collapses outside the pharmacy. Ebuka finds her and rushes her to the hospital, and he pays the bills and stays by her side. He begins bringing meals and checking on her recovery, and he gently urges her to accept help. A stranger then appears at their gate: Nnamdi, returned after ten years. Ife erupts in rage and recounts how he left them destitute with a white woman and forced her to drop out of school. Mma is devastated because she was told their father was dead, but Ebuka counsels Ife to let Mma choose her own relationship with him. The sisters eventually reconcile in a tearful embrace and acknowledge the pain each carried in silence. Days later Nnamdi returns to the house and pours out his remorse, and he explains that the woman he fled with abandoned him and that he served ten years in prison. Guilt has consumed him, so he asks not for forgiveness but for a chance to be their friend. Mma is moved and offers a tentative beginning, and she says let us just start. At a restaurant meeting he reveals he has transferred all his assets to them, including houses, cars, and shares, and he funds a two-year business management course for Ife and arranges for Mma to continue her studies in Canada. The sisters are overwhelmed, and they finally forgive him fully and embrace him as father. That evening Ife confesses to Ebuka that she has fallen in love with him, and he admits he has loved her for years but respected her brother boundary before they share a kiss.
