Blood And Bitterness

After twelve years in America, Tunji returns to Lagos with his young daughter Toby, who is grieving her mother. In Blood And Bitterness, flashbacks show a hard childhood: Chioma, his mother, abandoned him and his father Charles because they were poor, so Charles raised Tunji alone on a construction site. Years later Tunji meets Jane at a restaurant and feels an instant pull. Jane tells Mama Jane about his wealth, and Mama Jane pushes her to become the wife he craves. Jane hesitates, then agrees. Jane and her mother help around the house, and Tunji invites them to move in, which makes Toby suspicious. Mama Jane secretly gives the house help a bottle of liquid to put in Tunji's tea, claiming it will calm his nerves, so Tunji grows dizzy and weak. Toby begs him to drink only sealed bottles and to install cameras, but he ignores her. Toby overhears Jane and Mama Jane discussing their plan to harm him, so she vows to protect her father. Tunji, unwell, finds the household stress too much, so he rents an apartment for Jane and Mama Jane and orders them out. They protest, the scheme collapses, and they are forced to leave. At Toby's birthday celebration, Tunji's father Charles arrives, and the family is reunited. The father says, 'Now that we're back as a family,' then leads a countdown. Jane and Mama Jane are gone, so everyone sings Happy Birthday and cheers as Toby cuts the cake.
