Biography
EARLY LIFE
Valentine Chukwuma was born on Lagos Island. At around age two, he was taken in by an uncle in Surulere who lived a bachelor’s life and left him with daily food stipends, teaching him early independence and decision-making. He did not see his parents again for nearly a decade after they relocated to Ilorin. Growing up, he dreamed of modeling and studying medicine. When he did not gain admission for Medicine and his family could not afford private sponsorship, he enrolled for Computer Science at Federal Polytechnic, Oko. He has spoken of making skits in earlier years partly as a way to escape poverty. His work ethic and sense of purpose were shaped by family values of diligence, discipline, and finding joy in work.
CAREER
Valentine began his professional filmmaking career around 2018 as an editor on the Africa Magic television series My Siblings & I. His breakthrough came in 2020 when he co-edited Omo Ghetto: The Saga (Funke Akindele), one of the highest-grossing Nigerian films of its period (over ₦636 million). The film earned him an African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) nomination and later an AMVCA nomination for Best Picture Editing. He has since become a key editor (and sometimes colourist) for Scene One Productions and Funke Akindele’s major theatrical releases. Notable credits include Battle on Buka Street (2022), A Tribe Called Judah (2023), Everybody Loves Jenifa (2024), Adam Bol (2024), Aso Ebi Diaries (2025), Finding Me (2025), Behind the Scenes (2025), She Must Be Obeyed (Prime Video series, 2023), Love Me a Little More, No One Has to Know, Ogbedun, Salon 001, and others In 2024/2025 he was named Nollywood’s highest-grossing film editor of the year by FilmOne Distribution (shared recognition with Israel Odunsi for Everybody Loves Jenifa). Industry reports credit him with editing or co-editing five of the six most profitable Nollywood films of recent years. He is a two-time AMVCA nominee for Best Picture Editing. He also works as a colourist and has cinematography credits on shorter projects. He creates and shares original content (including the Murder Mystery series) and maintains an active professional presence focused on post-production excellence.
PERSONAL LIFE
Valentine keeps his personal and family life relatively private. He has referenced the importance of parental support (once reunited with his parents) and a strong belief in God’s guidance in his career decisions.
Valentine Chukwuma is regarded as one of the quiet architects of Nollywood’s recent box-office boom. While actors and directors often receive the public spotlight, his editing work on the biggest commercial hits has been pivotal in shaping pacing, emotion, and commercial appeal. He continues to work primarily out of Lagos with Scene One Productions and other major productions.
