Biography
EARLY LIFE
Oru Russell graduated from Theatre and Dramatic studies at Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State. He learned filmmaking by studying the techniques of great filmmakers and films.
CAREER
Oru Russell is a Nigerian filmmaker with a deep interest in the heroic stories of the everyday man. He is a trained screenwriter and director, and an ardent believer in the Auteur theory. His filmmaking style is heavily stylistic, with a focus on arts, symbolism, and metaphorical aesthetics inspired by the natural environment. His stories often center on the everyday person and their challenges, drawing inspiration from themes of Time, History, Childhood, Politics, and Art. He is an admirer of renowned filmmakers such as Francois Truffaut, Andrey Tarkovsky, Yashizuro Ozu, Orson Welles, and Sergei Leone. His first short film, 'Alone', was an experimental film released in 2018. He co-produced and directed 'The Waiting Song', which premiered at the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in 2024 and was also screened at other international festivals like the London Pan-African Film Festival and the Rwanda Mashari Film Festival. His upcoming project, 'Doughnut Boy', described as a love letter to Lagos and a story about mental health, is slated for 2025.
