Mwaura Bilal

EARLY LIFE

Mwaura Bilal was born and raised in Murang’a County. He developed a strong interest in theatre and acting while in secondary school. At Alliance High School he devoted significant time to the drama club, which he has said gave him purpose. After watching a Phoenix Players production written by Cajetan Boy, he decided he wanted to create the same emotional impact for audiences. Family support has been important to him, even though his parents initially found it difficult to understand his career choice.

CAREER

Bilal began performing around 2007 after high school, starting with set-book performances with groups such as Pambazuka Arts. He spent many early years in theatre, including stage management and an influential 2010 East African tour with Mumbi Kaigwa that reinforced his commitment to the arts. He has cited the late Derek Amunga as an early mentor. He transitioned into screen work and has built a substantial body of credits in Kenyan television and film, with several projects reaching international audiences via Netflix and other platforms. PERSONAL LIFE

Bilal has been open about his family situation. In interviews he confirmed he has four children with four different women and is not married to any of them. He has described himself as supportive of polygamy, believing shared responsibilities can ease pressures on couples, and has also expressed openness to polyamory, stating he does not believe in “owning” a partner. He has noted that he was not actively dating at certain points because he felt unequipped for full commitment and did not want to hurt anyone. In more recent comments he has indicated a desire for greater personal stability and to find a long-term partner.

Mwaura Bilal is regarded as one of the more dedicated and consistently working actors of his generation in the Kenyan film industry. He continues to take on leading and supporting roles in both local series and films with international distribution. He has also advocated for better support for the creative sector, including improved residual and collection systems for work broadcast beyond Kenya.
