Biography

EARLY LIFE

Cajetan Boy was born in 1966 in Nairobi’s Ngara estate to Cajetan Leo Boy and Hellen Boy. His father was at one time managing director of Fox Theatres, which gave young Cajetan early access to films before general release. As a child he wanted to become an astronaut until he realised there were none in Kenya. He attended Catholic Parochial Primary School and later Lenana School. After secondary school he briefly joined the armed forces at age 21 but was diagnosed with asthma and could not continue. He then worked for a short time as a bank clerk before enrolling at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), where he studied Agricultural Engineering and graduated in the early 1990s. He has also spoken of singing as a reggae vocalist in a campus band called Grass Root.

CAREER

After graduating and finding limited opportunities for agricultural engineers, Boy answered a newspaper advertisement and joined Miujiza Players as an actor in the early 1990s. He soon began writing stage plays. He was among the first Kenyan playwrights to have work staged at the repertory theatre (around 1999) and financed his first low-budget feature film, By Any Means Necessary (2002), with approximately KSh 100,000. He transitioned successfully from stage to screen and has worked extensively as a writer, director, producer, and occasional actor across film and television. Some of his film and television credits include: Writer/Director/Producer on projects such as Backlash, Obohoz, Benta, Captain Nakara (The Captain of Nakara), All Girls Together, Sita Kimya, Strata, On Your Marks (short that screened at the Miami Film Festival), Alone, Lockdown ’20, and others. Scriptwriting for popular Kenyan TV series including Makutano Junction, Lies That Bind, Sumu La Penzi, Girlfriends, Changing Times, Mheshimiwa, Guy Centre, The Team, Wash and Set, Better Days, and more. Actor in 40 Sticks (2020, Netflix) as the Reverend, among other appearances. His original story/idea was optioned and developed into the Bollywood film Kaminey (2009, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj). He is the Products Development Leader / Chief Creative Officer at Et Cetera Productions Ltd., a guest lecturer in screenplay writing at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) and Africa Film and Television Training Institute, and a long-time mentor with Maisha Film Lab. He also runs Cajetan’s Virtual Scripting Class, an online/WhatsApp-based practical screenwriting course, and has been involved with the Kenya Scriptwriters Guild in leadership roles.

PERSONAL LIFE

Boy is a dedicated family man. He has been married to Caroline Adongo for more than two decades. The couple have three children and often coordinate their professional schedules so that one parent is available for the children. They co-run the production company Et Cetera Productions Ltd. He has described their partnership as one of mutual respect and support for each other’s individual goals. In interviews he has emphasised the importance of family time, playing games with his children, watching children’s television, and reading science fiction in his free time.

Cajetan Boy is widely regarded as one of the pioneering and most consistent figures in modern Kenyan screenwriting and independent filmmaking. He has mentored many emerging writers and directors, advocated for stronger local storytelling, and continued to work across stage, television, and film for more than three decades. He remains active as a creative, educator, and industry organiser.
