Mumbi Maina

EARLY LIFE

Mumbi Maina was born on 14 January 1985 in Nairobi, Kenya. She grew up with a strong interest in the performing arts, particularly dance. Before focusing on acting she worked as a professional dancer and choreographer at ICC on Mombasa Road in Nairobi, teaching salsa and hip-hop classes (charging around KSh 500 per session) to support herself. Her entry into acting was somewhat accidental. In 2008 her sister Linda (who had studied theatre) was invited to audition for a film adaptation of a church play. Mumbi accompanied her and was encouraged to audition as well, which led to her first role.

CAREER

Maina made her screen debut in the 2008/2009 film Unseen, Unsung, Unforgotten (as Riziki), a drama focused on HIV/AIDS. The role earned her the Kalasha Award for Best Supporting Actress in Film (2009). She rose to prominence in Kenya with the role of Nandi in the popular NTV soap opera Mali (2011–2015). Other early Kenyan credits include Shattered (2011), Jane & Abel (as Cecelia), How to Find a Husband (as Jackie, 2015), and Africa Magic Original films such as 29, Terra Firma, Being Oti, Lovers Ransom, and Runaway Groom (as Leah). International breakthroughs followed: She portrayed journalist Zakia Asalache in seven episodes of Netflix’s Sense8 (Season 2, 2017–2018). Director Lana Wachowski later cast her as Ellster (sometimes listed as Eliister) in The Matrix Resurrections (2021), making her one of the few Kenyan actors in the franchise. She starred as Aisha in the Kenyan film Nafsi (2021) opposite Catherine Kamau. She played Thabisa in the Nigerian neo-noir La Femme Anjola (2021), earning an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) nomination for Best Supporting Actress (2022). Additional credits include the short film Lina (as Jane Mabagwa), Kati Kati (as Jojo), Salem (as Zara Mufasa), Crime and Justice (as Mrs. Mumbi), the telenovela Second Family (as Katherine), and the Showmax Original The Chocolate Empire (as Vera, 2025). She has received multiple Kalasha Award nominations (including for Shattered and Lina) in addition to her 2009 win.

PERSONAL LIFE

Maina maintains a private personal life and rarely discusses relationships or family details in public. She has spoken about prioritizing her career and personal peace. In 2025 she stepped down as longtime manager for R&B artist Otile Brown, citing the need for personal growth, peace, and a new professional direction. She remains active on social media, sharing career updates and occasional personal reflections.

Maina is recognised for transitioning successfully from local Kenyan television and dance into international streaming and Hollywood projects while continuing to work in East African productions. She has also been involved in production coordination and talent management. She continues to take on diverse roles across film and television.
